Our Story

Founded by Belinda and Joe Roberts, The Page and Prose Booksellers began as a cherished dream to create a literary haven in South Canterbury. Belinda's vision extended beyond the bookshop walls when she established Waiata in the Woolshed, bringing music and community together in a way that has touched hearts throughout the region.

After years of nurturing this beloved space, the Roberts’ have passed the torch to Renee Rowland, who brings her own deep passion for independent bookselling to our community.

Renee arrives with a rich background in the book trade, having operated two South Island bookshops including Timaru Booksellers, where she continues as a partner. Her experience extends beyond the shop floor. She has championed independent booksellers at the highest levels, serving as chair of the Booksellers Aotearoa New Zealand Board and bringing expertise from her earlier career in corporate communications and financial services.

Most importantly, Renee shares the same conviction that drew the Roberts’ to this work: bookshops are vital community spaces where stories connect us and enrich our lives.
